Tiruppur or Tirupur is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the banks of the Noyyal River, it is the fourth largest urban agglomeration in Tamil Nadu. It is the administrative capital of Tiruppur district and is administered by the Tiruppur Municipal Corporation, which was established in 2008.
The region was ruled by the Cheras during the Sangam period between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. It was under the rule of the early Pandyas-medieval Cholas, the later Cholas and the Vijayanagara Empire until the 15th century, followed by the Nayaks who introduced the Palayakkarar system. In the latter part of the 18th century it came under the Kingdom of Mysore and later under the British Raj as part of the Madras Presidency. The region played a prominent role in the Poligar Wars.
After India's independence in 1947, Tiruppur was part of the Coimbatore district. It was established in 2009 as the capital of the newly formed Tiruppur district. Tiruppur is part of the Tiruppur Lok Sabha constituency which elects its Member of Parliament. The city was predominantly an agricultural town, but the rise of the textile sector in the 20th century and rapid industrialization have turned Tiruppur into a major textile and knitting centre. Between 2021 and 2022, Tiruppur exported garments worth $480 billion, contributing to nearly 54% of India's total textile exports.
